How to Take the NJ Transit Train to MetLife Stadium from NYC

Updated: June 202625 min read

If you are staying in New York City (Manhattan) and attending a match at MetLife Stadium, taking the train is overwhelmingly the most popular and efficient method of transit. However, there is no direct train from NYC to the stadium; you must navigate a specific transfer. Here is the exact step-by-step process.

Step 1: Board at New York Penn Station

Do not confuse this with the subway or the PATH train. You need to enter New York Penn Station (located at 34th Street and 7th Avenue) and find the NJ Transit concourse. Purchase a round-trip ticket to "Meadowlands Sports Complex." You will board any outbound NJ Transit train that stops at "Secaucus Junction" (this is almost every single train on the Northeast Corridor, North Jersey Coast Line, or Morris & Essex line).

Step 2: Transfer at Secaucus Junction

The ride from Penn Station to Secaucus Junction takes about 10-12 minutes. You will exit the train at Secaucus and go up the escalators to the main concourse. Follow the massive crowds of fans and the green overhead signs directing you to the "Meadowlands Rail Line." You will scan your ticket here to access the lower-level platform.

Step 3: The Meadowlands Train

Board the dedicated Meadowlands train. This shuttle runs continuously on matchdays. The ride takes exactly 10-12 minutes and drops you off directly at the stadium gates. You simply walk off the platform and into the security line.

Train Survival Guide

  • Buy Round-Trip Tickets Early:

Always buy your digital ticket on the NJ Transit app before you leave your hotel. The cellular networks crash at the stadium, and you will not be able to load the app to buy a return ticket.

  • The Post-Match Wait:

When the match ends, 30,000 people will rush the train platform simultaneously. Be prepared to wait in a massive queue for up to 90 minutes.
