How to Use the Secaucus Junction Transfer Station Like a Pro

Updated: June 202625 min read

Secaucus Junction (officially the Frank R. Lautenberg Rail Station) is the beating heart of the New Jersey Transit system. It is a massive, multi-level transfer hub specifically designed to connect almost every commuter line in the state to New York Penn Station and the Meadowlands. If you are taking the train to MetLife Stadium, you will almost certainly pass through Secaucus. Navigating it efficiently is the difference between a smooth trip and missing kickoff.

The Layout of the Station

The station is divided into three primary levels. The upper-level platforms handle trains traveling east-west on the Northeast Corridor and North Jersey Coast Line (this includes all trains coming from New York Penn Station and Newark Airport). The lower-level platforms handle trains traveling north-south, which includes the dedicated Meadowlands Rail Line. Connecting these two levels is a massive central concourse. This concourse is the choke point where tens of thousands of fans must scan their tickets at the turnstiles to transfer between the levels.

The Transfer Process

When you arrive from Manhattan, you will step off your train onto the upper platform. You must ascend the stairs or escalators to the central concourse. Follow the massive overhead digital signs directing fans to the "Meadowlands Rail Line." You will see a dedicated bank of turnstiles. You MUST have your ticket ready to scan here. Once through, you descend to the lower platform and board the shuttle train directly to the stadium gates.

The Post-Match Return

The return trip is where chaos ensues. When the stadium train drops you off at the lower level of Secaucus, 1,500 fans will simultaneously rush the stairs to reach the concourse, scan their tickets again, and rush to the upper platforms to catch trains back to NYC. The crush at the turnstiles can be intense.

Secaucus Pro-Tips

  • Avoid the Middle Stairs:

When exiting the train at Secaucus, do not blindly follow the crowd to the central escalators. Walk to the extreme far ends of the platform where the staircases are often completely empty.

  • Buy Round-Trip Tickets in Advance:

Never attempt to buy a ticket at the Secaucus ticket machines during a stadium event. The lines are catastrophic. Have your digital round-trip ticket purchased and activated on your phone before you arrive.

  • The Right Train to NYC:

On the upper platform returning to NYC, do not worry about the specific train line name. Literally every train stopping on Track 2 or A is heading into New York Penn Station. Just get on the first one that arrives.

Secaucus Junction is a highly efficient machine if you understand how it works. Keep your ticket ready, move purposefully, and ignore the chaos around you.
