Where to Grab a Quick Breakfast Before an Early World Cup Kickoff

Updated: June 202625 min read

If you are relying on public transportation to get to MetLife Stadium for the 2026 World Cup, you are going to become intimately familiar with a massive glass-and-steel structure known as Secaucus Junction. This is not just a train station; it is the absolute epicenter of the New Jersey Transit rail network.

Secaucus Junction (often abbreviated as "SEC" on transit boards) is the transfer point that connects almost every major train line in Northern New Jersey to New York Penn Station and, crucially, to the Meadowlands Sports Complex. Understanding how to navigate this massive transfer hub is the difference between arriving at the stadium relaxed and ready, or missing the kickoff while sprinting down an escalator.

This guide will break down the geography of the station, the exact transfer process for the Meadowlands Rail Line, and critical tips for surviving the post-match crowd crush.

The Grand Transfer Process

MetLife Stadium does not have a direct train line from New York City or Newark Airport. You must transfer at Secaucus. Here is how it works:

  • Take any NJ Transit train originating from New York Penn Station, Newark Penn Station, or Hoboken Terminal that stops at Secaucus Junction.

  • Exit your train at Secaucus and go up the escalators to the main concourse level.

  • Look for the massive digital boards directing you to the Meadowlands Rail Line. This is usually located on the lower level tracks (Track G or H).

  • Board the Meadowlands shuttle train, which runs continuously on match days. It is a quick 10-15 minute ride directly to the stadium gates.

Ticketing Strategies

Use The NJ Transit App

Do not rely on the physical ticket vending machines at Secaucus or New York Penn Station on matchday. The lines will be hundreds of people deep, and missing your train because you were waiting to buy a $6 paper ticket is a tragedy. Download the official NJ Transit app before you travel, set up your credit card, and buy digital tickets. Your phone is your ticket.

The Post-Match Crush

Leaving the stadium is much harder than getting there. The Meadowlands Rail Line station is located right outside the main gates. When the final whistle blows, 40,000 people will immediately rush to the train station.

NJ Transit and State Police use a "queueing" system. You will be held in massive switchback lines outside the station. They only let a few hundred people onto the platform at a time to prevent overcrowding. You must mentally prepare yourself to wait in line for 45 minutes to an hour just to board the train back to Secaucus. Do not panic, do not push, and expect delays.
